Courage Before Comfort

Comfort is good in its place. It becomes dangerous when it is allowed to choose the truth for us.

Courage Before Comfort

Comfort is not the enemy. A warm room, a meal with people you love, a quiet night after a long week - these are gifts.

The problem starts when comfort becomes the judge.

If comfort gets the deciding vote, the hard conversation never happens. The apology waits another month. The compromise gets renamed prudence. The lie survives because the room would become awkward if someone said the true thing out loud.

That is how personal drift becomes family drift. It is also how family drift becomes cultural drift. Nobody had to announce a betrayal. Enough people simply chose the softer sentence.

A better order

The better order is not pain for pain's sake. It is courage before comfort.

Say the true thing as cleanly as you can. Repair what you broke. Refuse the flattering version of yourself. Then receive comfort as rest, not as escape.

Comfort after courage strengthens a person. Comfort before courage weakens the instrument that was supposed to tell the truth.

Ask the simple question: what would I do this week if I stopped letting comfort chair the meeting?
